In "Summer of Sam" (1999), serial killer Sam Berkowitz's 1977 murder spree is de-emphasized in order to focus on an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx filled with racists, perverts, criminals and sluts.

The film's anti-Italian images were so outrageous that they prompted New York columnist Steve Dunleavy to write: "(Summer of Sam) caricatures Italian Americans in a most disgusting fashion."
